It appears that work on Gears 6 may be well underway, as developer The Coalition is hiring for a Senior Gameplay Designer to work specifically on Gears of War, likely using Unreal Engine 5.
“The Coalition is a Microsoft first-party development studio located in Vancouver, Canada,” the job listing (via VGC) reads. “We are the official home of the Gears of War franchise, and our objective is to forge the future of the IP and push the limits of Microsoft’s entertainment platforms and devices.”
With the listing asking that the candidate be capable of creating new gameplay features, this suggests that The Coalition could be working on an entirely new Gears of War, rather than remakes or remasters of the previous games. Indeed, the studio may have scrapped its other two projects - including an original IP - to focus solely on Gears 6., according to Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb.
“We are searching for candidates with experience in Character, Camera and Controls (the 3 C’s), or artificial intelligence (AI) systems,” the job ad continues. “You have experience owning large scale features and guiding them from initial concept through to polish and completion.”
It's presumably early days for Gears 6, however, although a sequel to 2019's Gears 5 is long overdue. Previously, as well as Gears 5, The Coalition has also made 2016's Gears of War 4 and Gears of War: Ultimate Edition in 2015, making the sixth mainline entry its third Gears game. Here's hoping for an official Gears 6 announcement soon.
